Movement and Motion of Hair
Virtually every hair care commercial contains some depiction of a woman’s hair moving in an attractive, fluid, flowing manner. Clearly hair motion is an important consumer parameter which, to date, has not been appropriately quantified. Our previous efforts in this area showed how very different movement arises as a result of various hair characteristics. For example, Asian hair moves very differently from Caucasian; chemically-damaged hair moves differently from virgin hair; and conditioned chemically-damaged hair moves differently from the unconditioned state. This said, it was not readily evident how to quantify these observations. It is expected that additional experimentation will produce new ideas.

Video clips are analyzed in a variety of ways to produce data on the extent of movement,
changes in the tress shape and the uniformity of the hair movement (i.e. presence of frizzy flyaways).

Hair motion is dependent on the applied frequency – with seemingly different conclusions
being obtained as a function of this variable. For this reason, we advocate considering the shape of
amplitude –vs‐ frequency curves.
Hair Motion as a Function of Hair Treatment

Visually diminished motion is seen as amplitude –vs‐ frequency curves become flatter and broader.
