Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF)
The Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) is essential to SC barrier function and can be used to monitor biological
maturation processes occurring in epidermal cells.
Corneocytes can be obtained from human subjects by tape stripping. ATR-FTIR imaging spectroscopy is used to evaluate relative differences in the NMF content, corneocyte hydration level and possibly lipid organization inside the SC.
