We were pleased to have our own Dr. Trefor Evans (link to TRI bio) present at our seminar series on April 6th. Despite some truly terrible weather, more than 40 people attended. For those of you who were unable to join us, we are happy to make a video recording available now.

We have an intimate and very personal relationship with our hair. When asked to describe it, many will offer lengthy and detailed accounts of texture, thickness, condition, manageability issues and other descriptors. Not surprisingly then, a popular and powerful marketing proposition involves positioning hair care products as being custom-designed to meet the specific needs of an individual’s “hair type”. Yet, this begs the question “how do we classify hair and hair type”? From a marketing perspective, this begins with consideration of consumer language – where we are very familiar with terms such as dry, oily, fine, limp, thick, course, damaged, and many others. But, consumer language is often nebulous and imprecise – and such self-diagnoses frequently do not equate to technical understanding. A more-scientific discourse is required. So just how different is hair from the heads of various individuals? Is all hair essentially the same stuff that is extruded out onto the scalp in different sizes, shapes and colors? Alternatively, are less-obvious, or hidden, factors present?
